Monteiro's practical marker for Group 4: the ingredient list contains something β an emulsifier, a flavour enhancer, a modified starch, a colour β that doesn't exist in any home kitchen, because it's only made in a factory. Frozen pizza, flavoured chips, instant noodles and gummy sweets clear that bar almost without exception, regardless of brand.

colorectal cancer risk increase per 50 grams of processed meat eaten daily β roughly two slices of the kind of ham, sausage or pΓ’tΓ© that Stabburet makes. Unlike the broader ultra-processed-food research, this isn't a diet-pattern correlation: the IARC working group reviewed over 800 studies and found sufficient evidence that nitrite-cured and smoked meat causes cancer, placing it in the same evidence-strength category as tobacco and asbestos.
That shared category describes the certainty of the evidence, not the size of the risk β processed meat is not asserted to be as dangerous as smoking, only that the causal link is equally well established. Absolute risk still depends heavily on how much you eat and your baseline risk.
Beyond the meat-specific finding, three large cohort studies have looked at ultra-processed food generally:

If an ingredient only exists because a factory can isolate it β a modified starch, an isolated protein, a "flavouring" with no named source β that's the Group 4 marker, regardless of brand.
This is the one category with settled, non-correlational evidence. Check for E249βE252 on cured meat specifically β that's the ingredient the IARC finding is actually about.
The cohort studies measure UPF as a share of total intake. A frozen pizza on a Friday isn't the exposure the 12% figure describes β a diet where most calories come from Group 4 foods is.
